Oye Lucky is a tantalizing tale of a thief, who will steal everything he can set his eyes on, jewelry, cash, cars, clothes, antiques, television sets and even a dog! Supposedly based on a true story of a thief, director Dibakar Banerjee has surely tried to keep it as real as possible,
Showing Lucky as a rustic, or should we say, uncouth 15-year-old lower middle class Sikh kid, living in the ghettos of West Delhi.
Living with his crude Sikh father, father’s obese mistress, and a completely wrong set of friends, young Lucky (Manjot Singh) falls in puppy love with a greeting card seller’s young daughter, and just when he decides to woo her, begins his stealing career. What started as mere steal of a bike to take his love for a ride gets on to make way for the now grown up and clean shaven lad, Lucky’s (Abhay Deol) new shining Stealing career. With his magic mantra, “If you don’t have it, Steal it!”, Lucky goes on to steal virtually everything that comes his way. However, on his road to his so-called passion, Lucky realizes that he not only wants to be rich, but well respected and well known as well. Meeting all kinds of people on his way, be it his conniving partner, Bangali (Manu Rishi), his crafty girlfriend Sonal (Neetu Chandra), Orchestra Singer Gogi Bhai, (Paresh Rawal) or a high class veterinarian Dr. Handa, Lucky ends up being used by all for their means.
By the end of the movie, the viewers along with Lucky end up realizing that even a thief as witty as Lucky was not spared of the other, more shrewd thieves roaming around the city dressed up as Elite. Which is why, believe or not, you will end up loving this thief more than any other character in the movie.
